This Japanese technique for wood -block printing, is centuries old, discovered by the European artist of the 1800’s, it changed the course of Modern Art. Using watercolor for ink and printing by hand, allows an artist the ability to continue printing without a press and messy chemicals.
We will begin to understand the process with a simple Black & White image, learning to carve the Shina Plywood, how to apply the watercolors, and hand print onto beautiful Japanese paper. Next designing and creating a multi-block Mokuhanga print, introducing registration techniques, the Damp Pack, and how layering the colors can create some special effects.
No experience necessary, beginners will learn the basics of carving this soft wood, and experienced artists will improve their skills. Whether you work abstract or figurative, everyone will discover the beautiful effects and simplicity this process offers for color printing.
