1-Day Workshop

Create your own fantasy for the young or young-at-heart!  Fairy doors can be seen all over the world. Everything from part of a wooded yard or in the most urban settings.  In this workshop, you will assemble and decorate your own fairy door.  Unlike many other designs, this door really opens with room to leave notes or small treats!  Instructor will provide the cut pieces that you will assemble and prime.  Most assembled units are approximately 7-8” high, 12” long and 1” deep.  The door itself is approximately 3” x 5” (see photo).

Once assembled it’s time to mosaic!  Using materials from the mosaic classroom, or using your own materials, you’ll create your own design.  The substrate materials are suitable for indoor or outdoor.  If your fairy door is going to be outdoors, you will use thin set or silicon glue to adhere your mosaic materials and will want to select the appropriate tesserae (tiles/dishes/stones) that will hold up outdoors.  If indoors, PVA glue can be used.  Students may want to simply paint part of their fairy doors which can be done outside the workshop, or feel free to bring your own paints to the workshop.

Some participants will be able to finish their door in the allotted workshop time, but some may not, depending on complexity of design, and if grouting is required.  This project is easily finished outside the workshop.

Previous mosaic experience helpful but not required

Workshop length: 5 hours

Materials: The mosaic room has loads of available materials, but the participant may bring their own tesserae, paint or decorations to use.  The substrate, adhesives and classroom supplies are included in the workshop fee.
