Kay Byfield

I have been painting in watercolor for more than 40 years. Something about this unpredictable medium captured me from the first continuing ed class I took at the community college. I loved the transparency and fluidity of the paint, but I had no idea how to do a good painting. When we moved, I couldn’t find classes, so I took workshops and joined the local art associations wherever we lived. When my children were all in school, I began taking college art classes and eventually I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree which qualified me to teach college art. I did that for ten years, but then I left to go into marketing. I began teaching a class or two at the CAC more than ten years ago.

Sharing my love of watercolor is my passion. I like to help less-experienced artists find their own voices. To do that, I try to help them decide what their subjects will be and then look at the possible ways they can translate their vision into a painting. We talk about technique, design, and what it all means.

I believe that what we do at the CAC is important. We foster community, allow people to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world, and express their own way of looking at things. It takes courage for them to take risks trying new things and to show their creations. I look forward to seeing what they will do next.
