Learn how to confidently paint portraits in oil! This two-day workshop will focus on basic facial anatomy, color mixing for skin tone, and strategic use of light and shadow to bring the human face to life.

Day one will feature a live demonstration in which core techniques are shown step by step. On day two, you’ll put these techniques into practice alongside guided, personalized instruction. We will also be discussing oil painting best practices and material handling throughout the workshop.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a stronger understanding of how to tackle a realistic portrait. You will learn how to intentionally mix color and apply value shifts for a life-like painting. We will also demystify the materials so that you can apply it to your own practice in any subject matter.

Prerequisites:

Students must have basic experience using oil paint. Because we will discuss some oil painting fundamentals, you don’t need to be a pro at it. However, it is necessary to have some familiarity with the consistency of the paint to get the most out of this class.

Students should also have some basic experience painting or drawing human faces. We will build on those skills.
