Ashling Han – Multidisciplinary Artist, Educator & Curator

Ashling Han is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and curator whose journey from a biology degree in China to an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) informs her unique approach to blending science, art, and cultural exploration. With expertise in ceramics, fiber art, sculpture, and photography, she pushes the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship, layering bold colors, textures, and experimental techniques to create dynamic, thought-provoking works.

Her background in science shapes her research-driven yet intuitive approach, integrating physics, engineering, and material experimentation to explore themes of identity, migration, and social change. As an educator at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas, Ashling teaches both ceramics and tufting, offering students a space to explore creativity across diverse media.

In her ceramics class, Ashling emphasizes a balance between traditional skills—such as wheel-throwing, hand-building, and slab construction—and experimental techniques, encouraging students to create figurative sculptures, mold-cast pieces, and mixed-media works. Her approach invites students to think beyond conventional forms, using clay as a medium for personal expression and storytelling.

In her tufting class, Ashling introduces students to the world of fiber art, expanding their creativity through vibrant textures, layered compositions, and sculptural forms. Whether designing functional rugs or abstract pieces, she encourages students to explore the transformative potential of textiles and experiment with materials beyond the traditional. Through both ceramics and tufting, Ashling fosters an environment where art becomes a powerful tool for self-expression, innovation, and creative growth.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries across TX, DC, MD, and PA, and she has received prestigious accolades, including the highest Merit Scholarship from MICA and a public sculpture commission from the Asian Arts & Culture Center. Through her art and teaching, Ashling continues to challenge conventions, inspiring others to discover new ways of making and thinking.
