Árbol de la Vida (Tree of Life) Candelabras | Gossett | Tues morning

8 Session Class
Tuesday 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
8/11 – 9/29
10 of 10 spots available

In this class participants will create their own version of an Árbol de la Vida (Tree of Life) candelabra, inspired by the richly symbolic clay sculptures traditionally made in central Mexico. These iconic works are known for their intricate forms, vibrant colors, and storytelling elements that blend pre-Hispanic cosmology, Catholic symbolism, and everyday life.

Participants will learn basic handbuilding techniques such as pinching, coiling, and sculptural assembly to construct a candelabra form. We will explore how traditional Árboles de la Vida are structured—often featuring a central tree or column with branching elements, figures, flowers, animals, and candles—and discuss the meanings behind common motifs. While honoring the traditional format, participants are encouraged to personalize their piece with their own symbols, narratives, and creative interpretations.

Be as playful, serious, or decorative as you please.

The class will cover:

  • An introduction to the history and cultural significance of the Árbol de la Vida
  • Planning and sketching a balanced sculptural composition
  • Handbuilding techniques for complex, multi-part ceramic forms
  • Safe and successful construction methods for attaching decorative elements

We will discuss surface design options and apply them as time allows, depending on each participant’s progress.

No prior ceramics experience is required. All materials and tools will be provided.
